Portraiture is both challenging and fulfilling. We are wired to recognise faces. Portraiture is the art of capturing the essence of the person, the character behind the face, in such a way that the nature of the person is recognisable to the viewer

Each medium has it's advantages and it's weaknesses. The softness and subtlety of pencil, the bold contrasts of charcoal, the transparent play of watercolour, the delicacy of pastels, the opacity of oils, can all be used differently to expose an expression of character and situational context.
